UNM was founded in 1889 and is New Mexico's Flagship Institution. UNM is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico and is nestled between the Sandia Mountains and the Rio Grande. Branch campuses exist in other areas of New Mexico. UNM is a Tier I Research Institution, a Minority Serving Institution, and serves over 30,000 students.

The Department of Nuclear Engineering began over fifty years ago as a joint program with the Chemical Engineering Department. In 2014, it separated and now stands as its own department. NE at UNM offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in NE. Research areas exist in (but not only) fusion, materials, computation, criticality safety, space reactors, and advanced reactors. NE also houses an operational AGN-201M Research and Training reactor.
